We are lucky in Malta that there are a number of excellent dining options for us that cater for those that need gluten free food, and not only gluten free food but celiac level gluten free food. Many of these places either have a separate kitchen, are totally gluten free or they are very aware of the situation for a celiac and will prepare the food in a way that there is very little risk of cross contamination.

The following list are all places that I have personally tried and anything listed here are only places that I have been to!

For those places that are not 100% gluten free, always speak with your server first and even better call up in advance and let them know when you book. That way they are prepared for you, and it will make your experience that much easier.

The list of places are as follows:

100% Gluten Free Restaurants:

  • Ħelu Manna – Valetta & San Gwann

    • They have two locations in Malta – Valetta and San Gwann

    • Both are 100% gluten free and offer cakes, main dishes, sandwiches and much more!

  • Surfside Malta – Sliema

    • They have a separate kitchen for their gluten free food.

    • Selection of pizza, burgers, etc..

  • Grom Gelato – Mellieħa & St Julian’s

    • 100% gluten free gelato and sweet treats

    • Cones and crepes are also gluten free – well worth the visit

  • Wild Honey Beet and Bistro House – Valetta

    • 100% gluten free kitchen

    • Selection of pizzas

100% Gluten Free Cafes/Bakeries

  • Damiano’s Desert Malta – Gzira Closed Down

    • The best gluten free bakery on the island – cakes galore!

    • Unfortunately they closed down in September 2024

  • Paprika Bakery and Bistro Closed Down

    • Newly opened in September 2024, they offer gluten free bread, doughnuts and cakes

  • Fit Cake Malta – Valetta

    • Excellent selection of cakes, sandwiches and more.

    • Can be found in Debono Cafe in Valetta

100% Gluten Free – Home Bakers

If you are staying in Malta for a few days, there are a few home bakers that have setup businesses that offer cakes, pastries, etc… that you can order ahead of time and pick up. They are really very good, so if you have time I would highly recommend to order from them.

  • Corries Gluten Free Pastries and More

    • Corrine makes some of the tastiest gluten free delights. Drop her an email ahead of time and she will have the items prepared for you. Check out her facebook page for some of the things she can do

  • Ta.Rita Bakery

    • Gluten free and vegan baker, some of the best gluten free donuts, bagels, etc… Order ahead of time!

Gluten Aware Restaurants

These restaurants are not gluten free, but have been tried and tested by me. All were aware of Celiac Disease and took the necessary precautions.

  • Two Buoys – St Julians

    • Great breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner place in St Julians. They are very Cealiac aware and cook with clean and separate utensils.

  • Zen Japanese Sushi Bar & Teppanyaki – St Julians

    • If you opt for the Teppanyaki, you can see the food being cooked right in front of you. They are aware of Celiac Disease and take all the precautions.

  • Badass Burgers – St Julians Closed Down

    • Celiac aware and have gluten free buns and a separate fryer for fries

  • Oka’s at the Villa – Balluta Bay

    • They are aware of celiac and have a selection of items on the menu that are GF and can be prepared in a careful way

  • Elephant Shoe – Valletta

    • Sister restaurant (I believe) to Two Buoys and very celiac aware. Great place for breakfast/brunch/lunch. The pancakes are amazing!

  • Hard Rock Cafe – Valletta Waterfront

    • There procedures are pretty good and although no specific gluten free menu – they have a long allergens menu

    • All burgers can be made gluten free and they have a separate fryer.

  • Sapori Cafe – Birkirkara

    • Very safe for a celiac, and pretty much most of the menu can be made gluten free

    • They have burgers, pizza, pasta, pretty much the usual stuff

  • Safran – St Julians

    • Great Indian restaurant in the heart of St Julians.

    • 95% of the menu is naturally gluten free – just keep away from the Naan bread

  • Toro Toro Mercury Tower – St Julians

    • A little on the pricey side, but very good pan-Latin food

    • Servers aware and plenty of GF items to choose from, or can be made gluten free

  • Emma’s Kitchen – San Gwann

    • They have their own gluten free menu

    • It’s a small kitchen, so maybe those that are very sensitive just need to be cautious

  • Zest Flavours – St Julians

    • Sushi and asian dishes with allergens are listed on the menu clearly

    • Eaten here multiple times and never had an issue

  • Naan Bar – Valetta

    • Great Indian restaurant in Valetta

    • Most of the menu is gluten free!

Supermarkets

Malta is very good for gluten free food in the supermarkets, all major supermarkets will have some gluten free options – however the best ones are:

  • Greens (Swieqi, Birkirkara and Gozo)

  • Wellbees (many around the island)

You will find nearly everything you would need here, and more!

Online Ordering

Online ordering can sometimes be tough, as you are not sure if they understand your requirements, etc… However the following list of places I have ordered online from many times and never had an issue as they have specific sections for gluten free:

  • Surfside Restaurant

  • Sapori Cafe

You can check out Wolt or Bolt and you should be able to find them – good luck!

Suggestions

As I get to try new places, I will extend this list but hopefully it helps some people! Let me know if you also have other places I can try and add to this list! Your recommendations are highly appreciated, as I always look forward to exploring new destinations and hidden gems that others have enjoyed. Together, we can create a more comprehensive and exciting guide for everyone to use. Happy traveling!
